Max Fewtrell sweeps to European crown !
Max Fewtrell has won this year’s Formula Renault Eurocup, joining previous well-known winners of the category such as Felipe Massa, Brendon Hartley, Valtteri Bottas, Stoffel Vandoorne, Pierre Gasly and Lando Norris.
Born in Birmingham, England, Max Fewtrell grew up in Singapore and cut his teeth in the Asian MRF Challenge, the Renault-powered winter racing series. The British driver then joined the Renault Sport Academy after winning the British F4 Championship in 2016.
Competing in Formula Renault Eurocup with Tech 1 Racing, Max quickly confirmed his pace and consistency when he took the rookie title in his first year in the class, finishing in the points no fewer than nineteen times and taking his maiden win at the Red Bull Ring.
Nevertheless, Max wanted more and returned to the series in 2018 to win the "real" title !
After rejoining R-ace GP, he was regarded as one of the pre-season favourites. He lived up to that tag in the opening round at Circuit Paul Ricard, as he claimed two pole positions, won one race and ended as runner-up in the second. His flawless opening weekend was followed by a less glittering run of results, as the Englishman overcame two clashes with his future title rivals at Monza, suffered a DNF following his home win Silverstone and had a disappointing weekend in Monaco, before returning to winning ways in Austria.
Methodical and focused, the Renault Sport Academy driver then enjoyed a timely run of form with six podiums and three consecutive wins from September onwards. He jumped from fifth to first in the overall standings and could head for the Barcelona finale in a relaxed frame of mind.
With six race wins, six pole positions and six fastest race laps – the best figures in the category this season – Max Fewtrell therefore sealed his second title in just three seasons of open-wheel racing, despite stiff competition from Christian Lundgaard and Yifei Ye.
